  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Shannan -- A Clear-Eyed Invitation to Listen and Believe : Dante Stewart vulnerably invites us into the particular struggle and abounding liberation and joy of being young, Black, and male. As a white woman, I caught a glimpse into his world, and it has changed me. Stewart's memoir harkens to Between the World and Me by Ta-Nehisi Coates. His writing has momentum and teeth, yet is also tender, and even lyrical. I can't imagine what this work cost him, but I am grateful. It is the work revolutions are made of. • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Amazon Customer -- A beautiful & important memoir : Dante's lived experiences are obviously very different from my own, which is why it is so important to listen closely to his stories, his pain, his hopes, and his revelations. But this is more than just that. Shoutin' in the Fire is a beautifully written memoir, lyrical and poetic, and full of joy and truth. Read it to learn, read it to know you're not alone, read it to understand, read it to celebrate. ( Reviewed in the United States on October 12, 2021 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Kevin Carey -- So good : Part spiritual biography, part theological treatise, part critique of race in America, this book is a great read. I’ve followed Danté Stewart ever since reading through his Advent devotional during the 2020 Christmas season, and I can’t say enough about what a strong voice he has. He writes so well about what it means to be Black, American, and Christian, and I could not put this book down. The “American” chapter was 🔥. 10/10 ( Reviewed in the United States on October 16, 2021 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Maile Jackson -- This is a masterful offering from Dante! : This book took me on a journey from start to finish. Dante's candid, descriptive, and vulnerable writing style made me feel like I was experiencing his life story along side of him. He painted a picture so clear with his words that I often felt the emotions of the events as if they were my own. With that said, it was not always a comfortable read. I felt anger, I laughed, I had tears in my eyes, I felt shame, I felt pride amongst other emotions. As I am reflecting on Dante's book, I realize this is a book about a journey of self love, self acceptance, and self worth. A story of a young man that leaves home to find his way and make his mark on the world, and like all of us, got a little lost along the way. Putting his self love, self worth, and self image in the hands of a community that only loved him for what he could do for them, not who he actually was. As the journey progresses, Dante returns to his roots falls in love with what it means to be black and proud. This story doesn't have a fair tale ending unfortunately, it leaves you with more questions than answers. Do I fully love myself? What painful traumas from childhood have i suppressed? What does the future hold? Why is there so much hate in the world? Is America as great as "They" say it is? Am I doing my part in making the world more loving and safe? I believe everyone can find something valuable in this book, no matter your background or race. ( Reviewed in the United States on October 19, 2021 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Very Firm Mattress -- An incredible book. : This book from Danté Stewart follows in the footsteps of all of the black authors and artists that he is so beautifully attempting and succeeding in honoring. With a glimpse into Danté's story and a commentary on all of our stories, this book is the perfect debut for Danté and has me so excited for what's to come from him. • 5.0 out of 5 stars from CGC -- But this : This was a sermon from a southern soul. It is a glorious reckoning of self and salvation. It tells about freedom and justice. And church shouts, “Amen!” ( Reviewed in the United States on October 15, 2021 )
  • from Adam Shields -- VINE VOICE : A beautiful, poetic memoir of being Black in America. ( 5.0 out of 5 stars )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from A. Smith -- Poetic. Narrative. Vulnerable. Heartbreaking. Hopeful. : I highly recommend this to white Christians and pastors, but please understand that it is not primarily for us. It does not center us. There are places that may be difficult, but honestly even in the difficult places it is so very gracious. ( Reviewed in the United States on October 12, 2021 )
